2 The so-called IMAX scenes in variable aspect ratio movies are intended to be the same width as 2.40:1 movies, but now taller. So this would be larger than the 'traditional' 16:9 screen used in typical theaters. Accomplishing this in many theaters is difficult to impossible.

A16: 9 aspect ratio is used in projectors, televisions, and some computer monitors. You can display a 16: 9 aspect ratio content on a 16-unit widescreen. The image will look just like a movie. A 16: 9 aspect ratio is similar to a standard DVD player. It is an aspect ratio that is common among the latest movies.

Atleast with 2.35 or 16:9 you have content filling the entire screen at least some of the time. There actually is a decent amount of content that is 2:1, no where near 16:9 or 2.35:1, but it is a pretty popular ratio for high budget TV shows and even has been used in some movies. 185:1 and 2.35:1 are two of the most usual ARs used in movies (usually chosen for how well it fits the overall aesthetic of a given film). :1 was pretty much chosen to be a compromise of the two most common extremes, 4:3 (1.33:1) and 2.35:1. Yeah I'm with you.
Thedownside of a 2.35:1 screen is that 16:9 content will be pillarboxed. Additionally, most projectors are going to have 16:9 as their native aspect ratio. If you are watching content

Notquite — “21:9” displays are actually either 21.33333:9 (64:27) or 21.5:9 (43:18), and CinemaScope content (traditionally between 2.35:1 and 2.39:1) is similarly closer to 21.5:9, but we use “21:9” because it’s more readily comparable to 16:9 and it smooths over these slight differences. BDWeT.
